On mission in Honduras

First Baptist Church, Newport News, Va., sent a mission team led by Hispanic pastor Juan Garcia to Honduras Aug. 2-11. The team hosted three Vacation Bible School sessions of activities for 200 children, including Bible stories, crafts and recreation. Clothing and shoes were purchased for many of the children. Mike Willard,
retiring as pastor of Main Street Baptist Church, Kernersville, N.C., serving there for over 20 years.

Angie Zimmerman, retiring as minister of music at First Baptist Church, Jamestown, N.C., after serving there for 15 years.



DEATH

James E. Davis died Aug. 28 in Wichita, Kan. He served churches in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and retired in 1991 after having served for 18 years as clinical chaplain at Bryce Hospital, Tuscaloosa, Ala. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Boyd Davis; son, James E. Davis Jr.; daughter, Cynthia D. Simons; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, John B., Billy and Clarence Davis; and two sisters, Dorothy Coleman and Clara Fleming. Funeral services were held Aug. 31 at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home in Amelia, Va.

Kudos

O. Randolph Minter was recognized by Starling Avenue Baptist Church, Martinsville, Va., for his decades of service to the Lord through music by the commissioning of an anthem, Creator of the Stars of Night, by American composer Rene Clausen. The anthem is a translation of the 9th-century hymn, Conditor alme siderum.

Mary Thomas Kaylor, ordained to the ministry on Aug. 18 by First Baptist Church, New Bern, N.C.

Standing Rock Reservation 2013

Over 200 people from Virginia traveled to Standing Rock Reserva­tion in the Dakotas to minister to the Native Americans July 28-Aug. 2. Nine communities were visited, over 7,000 meals were served, and over 1,500 pairs of shoes were distributed with many receiving pairs of socks and underwear with a tote bag. A special horse camp was held for teens. This mission partnership started in 2009 between Woman’s Missionary Union of Vir­ginia, the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association and pastor Boots Marsh of the Stand­ing Rock Reservat­ion. Dates for the 2014 trip are July 27-Aug. 1. Pic­tured is a Virginia volunteer with a child from the reservation.

Benedetta Morello Mansell, ordained to the ministry on Aug. 3 by Longview Baptist Church, Raleigh.

Virginia Reynolds, assistant pastor for families and children at First Baptist Church, Greensboro, will be ordained to the ministry by the church on Sept. 29.

Kathy Poliey Turner, ordained to the ministry by Watts Street Baptist Church, Durham, N.C., on July 28.
