ATLANTA (ABP) — Former President Jimmy Carter will spend a second night in a Cleveland hospital after becoming ill Sept. 28 on a book-signing tour.
A statement from Cleveland's MetroHealth Medical Center said early Sept. 29 that Carter was "feeling normal" but doctors recommended "additional observation during the day."
A separate statement a couple of hours later said the 39th president of the United States would remain in the hospital overnight. "President Carter is in very good spirits, appreciates all the good wishes being sent his way, and looks forward to getting back to his busy schedule," the hospital said.
Carter, 85, complained of an upset stomach while on board a commercial flight on his way to a signing of his newest book, White House Diary. Upon arrival he was greeted by EMTs who examined him and then transported him to the hospital for observation.
Two book-signing appearances scheduled Sept. 29 in Washington were canceled. So was a similar event scheduled Sept. 30 in Columbia, S.C. After that the tour included a two-week break before an Oct. 13 event at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
