RICHMOND, Va. — Lawson Pankey, who for 25 years was a key figure on the staff of the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, died Dec. 12. He was 85 years of age.
Pankey joined the staff of what was then the Virginia Baptist General Board in 1965 as an associate in the training union department. Eventually he became director of a board division whose name changed frequently — department of teaching and training, department of Bible teaching, division of church programs and division of Sunday school development.
He retired in 1990, living in Richmond, where he was a member of River Road Church, Baptist.
Pankey is survived by his wife, Mary, and four children. Funeral arrangements were pending when this issue of the Herald went to press.
