Disappointed by ad
I write to express my disappointment regarding the ad for Lakewood Manor in Time magazine's Oct. 17 edition. When Lakewood Manor was in deep financial problems some years ago, appeals were made to Baptists to save this Baptist institution. Now it seems that Lakewood Manor does not want to be identified either as a Baptist or as a Christian institution. The best that can be mustered in the ad is the affirmation that “mother” (nature?) would be proud of Lakewood.
It appears that there are among us many who are ashamed to acknowledge our Baptist name or heritage. I for one deeply regret this trend.

Inspiring column
Fred Anderson never fails to produce a creative, inspiring column. However, his Heritage column in your Sept. 27 issue is of the highest quality.
As he shares his “Reflections on the sabbatical,” his observations reflect authentic Christianity. How deeply rich are his comments on Virginia Baptists' relationship with Italian Baptists. How touching is the report of the care given by the Sisters of St. Bridgett to his wife, Nancy, in her illness.
Fred's writing makes me extremely grateful and proud to be a Virginia Baptist.

Just the right note
Bravo! What a perfectly tuned editorial concerning Pat Robertson and President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela [“Religion run amok,” Herald, Sept. 1]. Your words hit the right notes, over and over again, without sounding mean-spirited, and with the exact amount of subtle humor.
I shudder to think that this man gained enough support to run for president of the United States. Thankfully, that was many years ago and with his continued mistakes in verbal judgment since then, he won't likely rise that high, or fall this low, again.
