RETIREMENTS
Jim Steele has announced plans to retire as pastor of Boones Mill Church, Boones Mill, effective Jan. 1.
Jack Marcom will retire as pastor of Friendship Church, Fredericksburg, effective Sept. 15.
DEATH
Robert S. Alley, a humanities professor emeritus at the University of Richmond and an authority on church-state relations, died Aug. 14 at the age of 74. The son of Reuben E. Alley, former editor of the Religious Herald, he had received a First Freedom Award from the Council for America's First Freedom in honor of his church-state expertise. He is survived by his wife, Norma Franklin Crane Alley; two sons, Robert S. Alley Jr. and John R. Alley; and a brother, Reuben R. Alley. A memorial service will be held Aug. 31 at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond chapel.

Glenwood Memorial Church, Danville, honored its pastor Averette Witcher and his family on July 30 on his 50 years in the gospel ministry. They were presented several gifts by the church.

Petersburg Baptist Association's Centennial Celebration will be held Sept. 10 at 3:00 p.m. at West End Church, Petersburg. The program will feature Fred Anderson, executive director of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society. Keynote speaker is John “Jack” Patterson, director of missions of Mid-Tidewater Association. Music will be provided by a mass choir from association churches.
