RICHMOND, Va.—Several hundred ministers and laypersons are in Richmond, Va., this week for the annual meeting of the Virginia Baptist State Convention, which is holding its 145th annual session May 14-17.

Leonard Smith, pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Arlington, Va., and outgoing president of the convention, will give a final address. The convention is expected to elect and install a new president during the four-day meeting.
The VBSC, founded in 1867, is the oldest organization of African-American churches in Virginia. It counts about 700 member congregations.
Mark Croston, the convention’s first vice president and pastor of East End Baptist Church in Suffolk, Va., is also president of the Baptist General Association of Virginia.
