BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (ABP) – Ten years ago, leaders of the student and education ministry Passport felt that after the 9/11 terrorist attacks that pre-printed Advent devotions were suddenly out of date. They quickly produced replacement online devotions on a website titled d365.org.
This week Passport is commemorating the 10th anniversary of the startup with a special week of devotional messages reflecting on 9/11, featuring special music composed by Ken Medema.
The week’s writers are from the list of 28 who wrote the first Advent series back in 2001, said David Burroughs, president and co-founder of Passport, based in Birmingham, Ala. Burroughs launched the ministry in 1993 with his wife, Colleen, while both were in seminary. Today she is current moderator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
After the original Following the Star Advent devotionals in 2001, d365.org followed up with a Lenten series in 2002. In 2006, through a partnership with Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, the site began offering daily devotions year-round.
Today d365.org is sponsored by three of Passport's ecumenical partners: the ministries of youth office of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the youth ministries office of the Episcopal Church and the congregational formation office of the CBF.
