BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (ABP) — March 9 is the first day in a 40-day Lenten series titled Journey to the Cross at an online devotional website that recently surpassed the 1-million-reader mark.
Passport, a student mission and education ministry started in 1993 by husband and wife David and Colleen Burroughs, launched the free devotional website d365.org to provide a quickly composed Advent series following 9/11.
After the 2001 terrorist attacks, Passport leaders feared Advent devotions written months earlier would feel irrelevant to teenagers coping with events of 9/11. They launched Following the Star, a website offering devotions written from the first Sunday of Advent to Epiphany Sunday.
With support from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's office of congregational formation they began the Lenten series three months later. In 2006, through a partnership with Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, the site began offering daily devotions year-round.
Today d365.org is sponsored by three of Passport's ecumenical partners: the ministries of youth office of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the youth ministries office of the Episcopal Church and the congregational formation office of the CBF.
