Pastors representing hundreds of Christian churches throughout metropolitan Richmond were to gather at Richmond Hill Feb. 16 to covenant to lead their congregations in praying a common list of topics for an entire year beginning March 5, 2006. The effort is known as Metropolitan Richmond at Prayer.
The Covenant of Prayer, which is being presented to over 1,000 Christian churches in metropolitan Richmond, has already been signed by several hundred pastors. The full number of participants will not be known until early March.
The Covenant has emerged from meetings between clergy representing most of the major Christian denominations. Participating churches cross nearly all of the lines that usually divide common Christian effort and witness in the city. Participants include black and white churches, city and suburban churches, as well as conservative and mainline churches.
The schedule lists a separate topic for each month for a year, with sub-topics for each Sunday. The pastor signing the Covenant agrees to lead the congregation in praying on that topic in the way that the church’s tradition finds appropriate.
Richmond Hill, an ecumenical Christian residential community, is providing the staff support for the effort.
