Precious Children of India

• Children make up 30 % (348 million) of the Indian population

• 158 million (75 million girls) are below the age of 7

• 190 million are between ages 7 and 14

• 59 million children have never seen a school

• 73 million are underweight with widespread chronic malnutrition

• 800,000 children die each year from easily preventable diseases

• 5 % of Indian children are affected by some disability

• Of the 27 million children born this year, 2 million will never see their first birthday

• India has 100 million child laborers

• They work 12-15 hours a day for as little as 3 rupees (8 cents) per day

• 15 million are bonded child laborers

• There are 18 million street children living in India

• Six million of them are between the ages of 6 and 10

India's children and sexual abuse

• 5 million children are working as prostitutes

• 2 million are between ages 5 and 15

• 3 million are between ages 15 and 18

• 500,000 children are forced into prostitution every year

• Children constitute 40 % of commercial sex workers

• 80 % of these are in the five largest metro areas

• Over 1 million children are trafficked across Asia each year for sexual purposes (World Health Organization figures)

• 63 % of girls in Delhi have been sexually abused by a family member

19 % of girls are sexually abused before the age of 8

• 28 % of girls are sexually abused before the age of 12

• 35 % of girls are sexually abused before the age of 16

• There is no legislation in India that covers the sexual molestation of young boys or sodomy
