FORT WORTH, Texas (ABP) — David Garland, distinguished professor emeritus of Old Testament and Hebrew at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, died July 21 in Fort Worth, Texas, after a brief illness.
“He made the Old Testament come alive as a book that speaks to the contemporary period,” Bruce Corley, former dean at Southwestern, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He made it leap off the page and into the lives of people.”
Garland, 83, taught at the seminary from 1958 to 1991. He previously was a pastor in Arkansas and Indiana. He served as interim pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Burleson, Texas, while teaching at Southwestern and became the church's pastor after his retirement from the seminary.
Born in Memphis, Tenn., in 1921, Garland is survived by his wife, Ellenor; daughter Jane Crumby of Benton, Ark.; and son David M. Garland of Memphis, Tenn.
