Organizations have abused their tax-exempt status to flood American politics with “a torrent of dark money” totaling more than $1 billion over the past 12 years, said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., during his opening statement at Wednesday’s tax subcommittee hearing on “Laws and Enforcement Governing the Political Activities of Tax-Exempt Organizations.”
