Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s running mate U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine will represent the campaign at this week’s Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc., annual gathering in New Orleans.
Kaine (D-Va.) is scheduled to speak at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, during the 55th annual session of the 1.5 million-member Baptist body, which kicked off Monday, Aug. 8, and wraps up on Friday, Aug. 12.
This year’s program focuses on voter engagement and policing tactics, reflecting both the convention’s founding out of the Civil Rights Movement in 1961 and the importance of the upcoming elections this year for African-Americans.
Scheduled preachers include Frederick D. Haynes III, senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, and Kevin Cosby, senior pastor of St. Stephen Church in Louisville, Ky., two congregations with relationships to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. About 5,000 people are expected to attend.
