Financial assistance for victims of the tsunami in South Asia may be channeled through the Virginia Baptist Mission Board.
“Virginia Baptists' hearts go out to the victims in the Indian Ocean area,” said Jim George, disaster relief coordinator for the VBMB. “We have seen the destruction and the disruption that disaster can bring to people's lives here in Virginia after Isabel, Gaston and five hurricanes in Florida this past fall. Now we see pictures of a disaster in Indonesia with loss of life too enormous to comprehend. Virginia Baptists are ready to respond to this disaster with our many partners.”
George said medical volunteers are being requested and interested persons should contact him at the Virginia Baptist Resource Center. “When other kinds of volunteers are needed we will let churches know in time to respond,” he said.
The Mission Board is forwarding financial contributions through the Baptist World Alliance, the International Mission Board and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Checks may be made out to the Virginia Baptist Mission Board and designated for “Tsunami Disaster Relief.” An indication should be made for the BWA, IMB or CBF and mailed to Virginia Baptist Mission Board, Disaster Relief, P.O. Box 8568, Richmond, VA 23226.
