Amy Miley Everett, ordained to the ministry by Dayspring Baptist Church, Waco, Texas, on Nov. 17, where she serves as associate pastor for spiritual formation and community life.

Cathy Harris, ordained to the ministry on Dec. 1 by Rosalind Hills Baptist Church, Roanoke, Va., where she serves as minister to children.

Merianna Harrelson, ordained to the ministry on Dec. 7 by Emmanuel Baptist Fellowship, Lexington, S.C. 

Courtney Gibson Hester, to be ordained to the ministry on Jan. 12 by Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla. 


Cecil E. Gholston, 84, died Dec. 27 in Richmond, Va. He had served as pastor of Central Baptist Church, Church Road, Va.; Smyrna Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va.; and First Baptist Church, Dillwyn, Va., from which he retired in 1992. In 1997, he began a six-week interim pastorate at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., and 11 years later retired as pastor emeritus, having served as its associate pastor, helping the congregation navigate the challenges of urban ministry. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; son, Barry, and daughter, Susan Cochrane.

Leslie H. Giles, 77, Dec. 28 in Cary, N.C. He served as pastor of Hester Baptist Church, Oxford, N.C.; Farmville (Va.) Baptist Church; and Ephesus Baptist Church, Raleigh, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Byrd Giles; daughter, Brenda Jenkins; two sons, William and David Giles; and six grandchildren. 


Sylvia Coates, 45 years, as minister of music at Emmaus Baptist Church, Quinton, Va.

Curt Grice, 20 years, as associate pastor of education at First Baptist Church, Arlington, Texas.

Tom Gaskins, 15 years, as pastor of North Run Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.
