Singing Our Faith
Music is integral to our faith but some individuals and congregations take this expression of ourselves to a new level.
Martin Luther wrote, “Music is a lovely gift of God which has often wakened and moved me. Music drives away the devil and makes people forget all wrath, unchastity, arrogance, and the like. My heart bubbles up and overflows in response to music, which has so often refreshed me and delivered me from dire plagues.”
In a new topic for BNG’s Storytelling Projects – “Singing Our Faith” – we explore this relationship between music and faith and the creative ministers, church leaders and congregations leading the way. Our storytelling journalism initiative is funded by generous seed-money grants from the Christ Is Our Salvation Foundation and the Eula Mae and John Baugh Foundation.
Our Singing Our Faith series:
In Hymns for a Lifetime, we learn about Ken Wilson’s hymn-teaching process and the love for hymns he instilled in the children at Knollwood Baptist Church during three decades of ministry. We also examine some of the trends and changes in church music and ministry.

In Norfolk Street Choir, while Norfolk, VA is a performance rich city, Freemason Baptist Church’s idea for a street choir was never about performance. Rather, it was “to lift spirits and add dignity to human beings, no matter their circumstances.”
