DEATHS
William W. “Bill” Marshal, 86, died Jan. 22 in Frankfort, Ky. Following pastorates in Kentucky and Virginia, he became field director for the Middle East, North Africa and East Asia for the SBC Foreign (now International) Mission Board. In 1976 he was named vice president for the Foreign Mission Board. In 1983 he became executive secretary-treasurer for the Kentucky Baptist Convention until he retired in 1997. He was co-director of The Marshall Center for Christian Ministry at Georgetown (Ky.) College for 10 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters Sharon Clifton and Shawn Marshall; and nine grandchildren.
Vaughan Walker, 68, died Jan. 28 in Louisville, Ky. He was the first African-American elected to any Southern Baptist Convention seminary faculty and was a professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville beginning in 1986. In 2016 he retired from teaching full-time as WMU professor of Christian ministry and director of programs in Black Church Leadership. He then became senior professor of Black Church Studies. He was pastor of First Gethsemane Baptist Church in Louisville for nearly 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; three children, David, Mary and Eryn; and six grandchildren.
