This is being written in regard to the current downward financial planning in many of our churches, the BGAV and the SBC. There’s something about this in the context of today’s economy that needs attention. While we keep using the theme of a downward economy as a reason for our flat church budget planning, reports of people’s spending habits don't quite match.
Observations by any person reveals that we are willing to put our dollars or credit on whatever we set as a priority. Stores openly display their high-end priced items in the most visible locations. If they weren’t selling we would see them removed. Sports arenas and stadiums are full. People stand in line to get the latest electronic gadgets. Home shopping networks are selling out their advertised items. Luxury car sales have been way up over 2009. We are told that we live in one of the higher median income states in the nation.
As I sat through the recent excellent budget presentation breakout session during our BGAV annual meeting, hearing of the 2011 budget reduction gave me great concern. Also, reading where our IMB will be reducing the number of missionaries by 600 only increased that concern. All of this doesn’t add up in light of our committment to a Great Commission Resurgence.
I was very blessed in leading two churches through “The Forward Program of Church Finance.” This was a program through our then SBC Stewardship Commission. Seeing these churches progress through information, education, challenge and committment, will always be highlights of my ministry
I have envisioned that something similar could be done on a statewide level. It may take two to three years to see the total process through. Wouldn’t it be exciting to see this effort culminate during a triumphal celebration of church response to increased missions giving at an annual BGAV meeting? We cannot sit idly by in our churches and do nothing. Let’s accept the challenge to enlarge our vision for Kingdom Work beginning here in Virginia.
