Retirements
Bob Wheeler has announced plans to retire as associate minister/minister of music at Broadus Memorial Church, Charlottesville, effective Dec. 31.
Pat Power has retired as choir director at Airlee Court Church, Roanoke, after 11 years of ministry there.
Charles Stinson, pastor of North Bedford Church, Forest, has announced plans to retire Dec. 31.
Ordination
Katrina Salter, minister to children at Rosalind Hills Church, Roanoke, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on May 15.
Seminary Graduates
Seven students with Virginia ties received degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary on May 6. Receiving the master of divinity degree were: Marcel Ruth Bojrab, Lara K. Echerd, Steven Anderson Latham and Matt Senger. Hyunsun Esther Chung received a master of arts in marriage and family counseling. Kermit E. Jones Jr. received a master of divinity with biblical languages degree.
Church News
Bethel Church, Palmyra, will host the “Children of the World” International Children's Choir on June 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Central Elementary Auditorium. The group is composed of 16 children from different countries who will perform songs with an emphasis on their home countries. A love offering will be taken for WORLD HELP.
Calvary Church, Lynchburg, will host a concert by “Eighth Day,” a mixed trio from Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Lakeside Church, Richmond, will change its Sunday schedule beginning June 5. Sunday school will begin at 9:15 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m.
Lyndale Church, Richmond, will celebrate its 40th anniversary with homecoming on June 12. The service will be followed by dinner on the grounds.
Churchland Church, Chesapeake, will celebrate its 220th anniversary on Sunday, June 5 at 11 a.m., followed by dinner on the grounds.
Death
Former Virginia Baptist pastor Cecil Kenneth Herrin died in Statesville, N.C. on May 14 at the age of 80. In addition to several churches in North Carolina, he had served as pastor of Gethsemane Church, Richlands, for 22 years. He served on the Virginia Baptist Mission Board and as a trustee of the Religious Herald. He is survived by his wife, Vernelle Blevins Herrin; two sons, Roger Kenneth and Dean Andrew Herrin; a granddaughter; a brother; and three sisters. A funeral service was held May 17 at First Church, Statesville, N.C.
