RICHMOND — Although separated by thousands of miles, the Virginia Baptists worshiping at the Grace Chinese Baptist Church of Richmond feel the pain of the homeless in China.
Responding to the devastating earthquake which stuck Sichuan Province on May 12, Grace Chinese Church is coordinating a relief effort to purchase 1,000 tents for the disaster area. Chinese government officials estimate that 3.3 million tents are needed to provide shelter for the 5.5 million Chinese made homeless by the quake. As many as a quarter million people are living in the open due to their homes being destroyed or so damaged that they cannot be occupied.
Grace Church leaders say a tent large enough to sleep seven people can be purchased and shipped to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, for $100.
