I found it very interesting to read all the publicity about Baptist history in the Jan. 15 issue of the Religious Herald—do we date from early Christianity, or just 400 years or so ago, or somewhere in between? In the various positions and discussions, I did not see any mention of a historical fact that must be overlooked by many staunch Baptists.
When I was in the old city of Ephesus many years ago, I was struck by the fact that in the floor of the old church is a baptistry with steps leading down and up, dating from roughly A.D. 200 or 300. Added to the church around A.D. 500 or 600 stands a beautiful, large marble pool for baptism by pouring.
So how can anyone be adamant about any date for the beginning of Baptists?
