MISSION MOMENT: A mission team of 52 youth and adults from Colosse Baptist Church in West Point spent a week in Baltimore, Maryland. They shared music; worked at Garden Harvest, a non-profit farm to help feed the homeless; and served at “Moveable Feast” preparing and packaging meals for HIV/AIDS and breast cancer patients. The team also helped at Northwest Baptist’s Sports and Arts Camp, coordinating a day camp for African immigrants, as well as feeding the homeless at a Lutheran church, packing bag lunches to take to those homeless living in a park. The mission team worked through Embrace Baltimore and partnering churches to meet needs in the Baltimore area.

DEATH
• Sterling H Moore of Richmond died Aug. 24 at the age of 61. He served as attorney for the Women’s Missionary Union of Virginia from 1995-2005 and as a member of the Foundation for WMU, SBC. He is survived by his wife, Janet Pickett Moore; daughter, Joanna M. Crabbe; son, William T. Moore; four grandsons; a brother and sister. Funeral services were held Aug. 28 at Second Baptist Church, Richmond.

• Atlee Community Church, Mechanicsville, will host DivorceCare, a support group for men, women and children (5-12) to help deal with the pain of divorce. Kick-off will be Fri., Sept. 11 from 7-9:30 p.m. and Sat., Sept. 12 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. Sessions will be on Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 15 through Nov. 17. • First Baptist, Danville, continues the celebration of its 175th anniversary with John Upton as guest speaker on Sept. 20.
• Union Hill Church, Brookneal, will host a Concert on the Lawn featuring Lynch Station Men’s Vocal Group, Three Nails and The Gospel Few on Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. There is no cost for the concert.
• The Virginia Baptist Women’s Chorale will be in concert at Park View Church, Portsmouth, on Sat., Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. The program includes traditional and contemporary styles of music.
• Alton Church, Alton, will celebrate its 100th anniversary the weekend of Sept. 19-20. Family Fun Day will be on Saturday with lunch served by the deacons. A celebration service will be held on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. followed by a covered-dish lunch. Former pastor Clyde Shelton will be guest speaker.
• The Entrust Alkulana Golf Tournament, sponsored by Entrust Federal Credit Union, will be Fri., Oct. 9 at The Hollows Golf Club in Montpelier. Proceeds will benefit Camp Alkulana, a ministry to inner-city children of the Richmond Baptist Association. Box lunches will be served at 12 noon followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m., captain’s choice format. • First Church, Hillsville, recently held a noteburning on a note for its new sanctuary. The church borrowed $490,886 in May 2005 to rebuild the sanctuary that was burned in 2002. The note was paid in full in May 2009, a full year ahead of time. Greg Yonce, trustee, read a document to the congregation prior to the burning of the note. Steve Williams, budget chairman, and James Armentrout, deacon chair, burned the note. Lawrence Childs is pastor at First Church, Hillsville.

MISSION MOMENT
Twenty-three adults and youth from Temple Baptist Church, Covington, spent a week in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, June 15-19, working with the Norfolk Baptist Association on four mission projects.

With the help of Kim Jessie, NBA church and community missionary, the team from Temple Church did home repairs and renovation, conducted Vacation Bible School and a Backyard Bible Club and participated in beach ministry.
Youth participating in the trip were Emily Burdette, Amber Bess, Paige Bazzrea, Summer Martin, Daniel Humphreys, Daniel Nicely, Ethan Smith and Rebecca Vaughan.

CORNERSTONE LAYING
St. John’s Baptist Church in Virginia Beach placed the cornerstone for its sanctuary building on May 31. The building with a new sanctuary, administrative wing and library was dedicated on Aug. 30.
