It was with great delight that I read Lauren Heilman's article in the July 26 issue of the Religious Herald: “African-American pastor blazes trail at Northern Virginia church.” Being one who was raised to believe that pride is a sin, I submit this correspondence as a public confessional.
I am exceptionally proud of Broad Run Baptist Church, a founding congregation of NorthStar Church Network, for discerning God's direction and making a bold Kingdom decision to call Larry White as their senior pastor. I am proud of the member congregations of NorthStar Church Network that opened their pulpits for Pastor White to preach. I am proud of Columbia Baptist Church for not only providing financial support but also embracing Pastor White and his family and welcoming them into their family. I am proud of Greg Loewer, a member of NorthStar's staff, who immediately responded to Pastor White's humble request for a pair of shoes appropriate for Sunday dress. I am proud of Dr. Sanford Beckett, the associate director of NorthStar Church Network, who provided great encouragement and council for Pastor White and was the individual who introduced him to so many of our churches. I know Dr. Beckett found it to be a great honor to be invited to deliver the sermon at Larry's installation service. In fact, it was Dr. Beckett who alerted the editor of the Religious Herald about this story. But most of all I am proud of Larry White and his family. They have endured great challenges since Katrina. But Pastor White has remained steadfast, faithful and open to the astonishing new direction God has called him to.
Yep, it has been my privilege to observe this story and I find myself busting with sinful pride. Feels pretty good, too!
