Panel to study BGAV’s regional affiliations

NewsReligious Herald  |  November 14, 2007

RICHMOND — The scope of the Baptist General Association of Virginia's relationship with churches outside of Virginia will be the focus of a recently-appointed subcommittee.

BGAV president Boyce Brannock appointed the six-member subcommittee for the study of regional relationships and announced it at the fall meeting of the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. Chairing the subcommittee will be Michael Clingenpeel, senior pastor of River Road Church, Baptist, in Richmond.

The subcommittee's task is to examine:

• The appropriateness of the BGAV expanding its affiliation with non-Virginia churches which seek affiliation with the BGAV;

• Any services which the BGAV currently provides which may be of benefit or interest to non-Virginia churches.

• Any services or opportunities the BGAV might create for the benefit of non-Virginia churches;

• Changes in the constitution and bylaws of the BGAV or the Virginia Baptist Mission Board which might be necessary to accommodate relationships with existing or future non-Virginia churches.

The subcommittee is to make recommendations by the summer of 2008 to the BGAV president, who in turn will report to the Mission Board's executive committee.

Other members of the committee are Jim Baucom, senior pastor of Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church; Ann Brown, Woman's Missionary Union of Virginia leader and a member of First Baptist Church in Gretna; Phillip Cannon, minister of education and administration at First Baptist Church in Dalton, Ga., which is affiliated with the BGAV; Nancy Stanton McDaniel, senior pastor of Rhoadesville Baptist Church in Rhoadesville; and Keith Smith, senior pastor of Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond. Robert Dilday, associate editor of the Religious Herald, will serve on the committee in a resource capacity.
