HANNIBAL, Mo. (ABP) — Hannibal-LaGrange University President Woodrow Burt plans to retire next year.

Now in his 18th year as the institution's head, Burt announced at the HLGU board of trustees meeting Sept. 9 that he will step down on Aug. 31, 2012.
Burt began his career with HLGU as a faculty member 32 years ago. He has seen enrollment rise from 369 that year to an expected 1,200 this fall. Burt also has seen expansion of academic programs, additional athletic programs and construction of new facilities, including the Carroll Missions Center.
"Through God's grace, the support of many wonderful alumni and friends, the backing of a great board of trustees and the work of an outstanding faculty, staff and students, we have accomplished much," Burt told trustees.
During his tenure, Burt has served in a variety of positions, including as admissions director, dean of students, registrar, academic dean, chief development officer, executive vice president and president.
He earned an educational specialist and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
"During this final year of my presidency, I believe we still have some significant work to accomplish, and with God's help we'll finish the tasks," he said. "I am grateful to have had the privilege of being a part of an absolutely wonderful Christian institution for over three decades."
