DURHAM, N.C. — The director of the Baptist House of Studies at Duke Divinity School says he’s enthusiastic about the Feb. 13 announcement that Richard Hays is the divinity school’s new dean.
Hays, a professor of New Testament at the divinity school, assumed the dean’s post in August 2010 on a two-year basis. This month’s action by Duke University president Richard Brodhead confirms Hays as dean for a full term.
“What drew me to Duke and what keeps me excited about being here is a vision for theological education of heart and head with an eye to church and academy,” said Curtis Freeman, who directs the divinity school’s Baptist House.. “I continue to be amazed by the excellence of what happens here, and no one embodies that excellence better than Richard Hays. I am excited about the prospects of his leadership as dean.”
Hays, an ordained United Methodist minister, joined the divinity school’s faculty in 1991, leaving a position at Yale Divinity School. Duke University is one of 13 seminaries founded and supported by the United Methodist Church.
