Center for Baptist Heritage plans film festival to highlight story

NewsJim White  |  February 28, 2009

The Center for Baptist Heritage & Studies will sponsor the Key Film Festival, designed to allow Baptists an opportunity to share the Baptist story through video.

The Festival is in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Baptists as an expression of Christian faith. Throughout 400 years Baptists have encountered many incredible stories of beginnings, discovery and struggle. So let’s capture these stories on film!

The festival’s name reflects such a story. The Culpeper jail in Culpeper housed several Baptist ministers and laymen who struggled for the idea of religious liberty for all. One of the most fascinating individuals housed in the jail was James Ireland. While in prison several attempts were made on his life.

The lock and key from the Culpeper jail are on display in the Heritage Gallery of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society and serve as a reminder of the price our forefathers paid to secure a foundational Baptist principle.

The Center for Baptist Heritage & Studies is seeking entries of no more than 15 minutes that share a segment of the Baptist story. The film can focus on a particular principle, person, place or event. The works can reflect a local, state, regional or worldwide story about Baptists. The works should be a true account, although some artistic liberties might be taken to enhance the historical story.

Entries can be submitted in three categories: youth (12-18) or adult (amateur or professional). The video must be sent in high quality DVD format. Please submit three copies, clearly labeled with the director’s name, title of work, youth or adult, amateur or professional. Winning entries will be selected by a three-judge panel on artistic vision, technical application, and historical accuracy.

A Key Award will be given in all three categories. All entries must be postmarked no later than Oct. 1, 2009, in order to be considered. The author of the work must secure any copyright permission needed including, but not limited to, images and music.

The Center reserves the right to promote, publish and use any works submitted. Key Awards will be announced at the 2009 annual meeting of the Baptist General Association of Virginia. The Center also anticipates screening the winning entries during the meeting. Directors and casts are encouraged to attend.
