Grammy award winning artist, Cynthia Clawson will be performing in concert on Friday, Nov. 6. The 7 p.m. concert, sponsored by the John Leland Center for Theological Studies, will be held at First Baptist Church Newport News, one of Leland’s satellite locations.

Described as “the most awesome voice in gospel music” by Billboard magazine, Cynthia Clawson has grown from singing as a small child in her father’s church to a Grammy award winning performer. Her accomplishments include five Dove awards and the release of over 20 albums. Her rendition of Softly and Tenderly set the evocative tone for the soundtrack of the Academy award winning movie The Trip to Bountiful.
Cynthia’s concerts are full of color, sound and texture. She shares songs ranging from traditional hymns, to southern gospel classics, to romantic jazz ballads. Her most recent releases are Always and episodes. Always is a collection of jazz standards reminiscent of love songs from her parent’s generation. The songs on episodes, produced by Cynthia’s son Will, reflect the passion and vulnerability of a journey towards home.
Future projects that Cynthia hopes to develop include the reinvention of a one women show called “See Me God” and an album of lullabies for the young and the young at heart.
Cynthia will be joined in concert by her longtime accompanist Bruce Greer, a prolific writer and musician in his own right.
Today, Cynthia calls Austin, Texas home. When she’s not on the road performing concerts, she leads in worship at The Sanctuary along with her husband, Christian composer and pastor, Ragan Courtney.
Courtney will conduct an interactive workshop focused on incorporating the arts into Christian worship the morning of the concert also at First Baptist Church. Discounted tickets for both events are available by contacting Leland.
