Dr. Abdul El-Sayed Won the MI Primary Despite Democratic Establishment’s Weaponization of Islamophobia

In a historic (and extraordinarily close) race, primary voters in Michigan have selected Dr. Abdul El-Sayed—an insurgent, progressive, and Muslim—as the Democratic candidate for the US Senate. Running against El-Sayed was Congresswoman Hayley Stevens, a centrist, establishment, and corporate-PAC-funded candidate. Primaries are supposed to be the place where platforms and policies separate and distinguish candidates from one another; in this case, however, the primary became a venue for mud-slinging and a smear campaign against El-Sayed in the form of rank and disgusting Islamophobia.
