• Julie Perry was ordained to the gospel ministry by Broadus Memorial Church, Charlottesville, on July 19.
DEATHS
• Retired Virginia Baptist pastor and professor Thomas O. Hall Jr. died July 20 in Florence, S.C. at the age of 85. He had served as pastor of Starling Avenue Church, Martinsville, and Webber Memorial Church, Richmond. He also served as interim pastor for numerous churches in the Richmond area. He was interim pastor four times at Skinquarter Church, Moseley, and was named pastor emeritus at Skinquarter and a library was established in his name. Hall taught at Virginia Commonwealth University and served on the Education Commission of the SBC and was trustee of the Religious Herald for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mabel Grooms Hall; a son, Thomas O. Hall III; and two brothers, Bruce A. and James C. “Chuck” Hall. A memorial service was held July 23 with interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Florence, S.C.
• Katharine P. Warren died June 9 at the age of 93. She was a charter member of Triangle Church, Triangle. She served on the Virginia Baptist Mission Board and was the first woman moderator of Potomac Association. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Warren; a son, Forest Warren; and a sister, Virginia Havasy. A memorial service was held June 14 at Triangle Church.

• First Church, Richmond, will have “Classics in the Courtyard” each Thursday in August beginning at 8 p.m. Free admission, drinks and popcorn. Bring a lawn chair. Movies and dates are: Aug. 6-Sabrina; Aug. 13-Shenandoah, Aug. 20-The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Aug. 27-Song of the South.
• Western Hanover Church, Montpelier, held a dedication and celebration service July 26 followed by a luncheon-reception. It was the first service held in its new facility at 16050 Mountain Road. Terry Sharpe serves as pastor.
• A group of young people from Moffett Memorial Church in Danville participated in a weeklong mission experience to help the residents of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During the week of July 5-10, the team participated in community care and ministry projects, ranging from running a sports camp for underprivileged children to providing in-home service for the elderly to assisting local human service agencies. This trip, sponsored by the Group Workcamps Foundation of Loveland, Colorado, involves young people and their leaders from across the United States, representing many denominations.

RETIREMENT
• L’Rees Morris has ended her service of over 14 years as the organist at Port Norfolk Church, Portsmouth. She was recognized in a special service on June 28 that was followed by a luncheon in her honor. She was active in WMU mission work and in the Portsmouth Music Club. She is the widow of S. Jasper Morris who served as pastor and interim pastor in churches throughout Virginia.
INSTITUTIONS
Hargrave Military Academy recently received a donation from the estate of Pauline Cosby Clements valued at $36,000. The funding was directed to maintaining a strong scholarship endowment for future students. Clements, a 1923 graduate of the Fredericksburg Normal School (now the University of Mary Washington), died May 3 at the age of 105. She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church, Chatham. As a dedicated charter member of the Hargrave Military Academy Woman’s Club, Clements was known throughout her years for philanthropy to the Academy, where she was a former middle school instructor. Hargrave is an all boy military school focused on college preparation. The Academy is affiliated with the BGAV and celebrates its centennial on Sept. 9, 2009. Approximately 400 students attend the Academy annually.
