Danny W. Collins, pastor of Fairlawn (Va.) Baptist Church, received a certificate of recognition for over 40 years of dedication and faithfulness to church-related ministry at the Appalachian Pastors, Spouses and Staff Retreat in Marion, Va., on July 21-22.
Bill Miller will celebrate his 25th anniversary as minister of music for Second Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., on Sept 25. A special service is planned for 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.
News
The weekly preschool of First Baptist Church, Waynesboro, Va., has established the Susan Stratton Memorial Scholarship Fund. The first director of First Baptist’s preschool, Stratton was devoted to its ministry until her death in April. The fund will provide scholarships to children in the community.
In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, Fredericksburg (Va.) Baptist Church will join with nine congregations in its community for a reading of the KJV from Genesis through Revelation. Members from Fredericksburg Baptist will read aloud Ezekiel through Malachi on Sept. 25 beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Deaths
Former Virginia Baptist pastor Richard Curtis Newlon died August 4. He had served as pastor of Maple Grove Baptist Church in White Stone, Va., and Irvington (Va.) Baptist Church, along with congregations in Richmond, Va., and North Carolina. For many years he worked at the Virginia Baptist Children’s Home (now HopeTree Family Services) in Salem. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Farley Newlon; a son, Blaine Newlon; two daughters, Laura Fay Croff and Dawn Lee; and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held Aug. 16 at Irvington Baptist Church.
John William Stoker died July 2 at the age of 58. His ministry included three Virginia Baptist churches. He was chaplain with the Baptist Health System, serving at the North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He is survived by his caretaker, Bonefacio Palma; mother, Mary Jho Stoker; two sons, Joshua and Jeremy; the mother of his children, Jackie Stoker; and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held July 7 at The Fellowship of San Antonio, Texas.
Paul G. Wiley, former pastor of several Virginia Baptist churches, died Aug. 20 at the age of 96. He had served as pastor of Central Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., Sandston (Va.) Baptist Church and Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk, Va., and for 25 years he was pastor of Arlington (Va.) Baptist Church. He had also served as chaplain at Fork Union Military Academy. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Dean; two sons, Garland and Stephen Wiley; a daughter, Deanie Moore; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Aug. 27 at Westwood Baptist Church, Springfield, Va.
