Historic baptism
Pastor Jason Canipe baptized 15 people in the Piney River on August 25, the first river baptism for Piney River Baptist Church in Lowesville, Va., in 44 years. The baptism site at Robin’s Pond was used for baptisms dating back to the early 1800s.

DEATH

F. Gary Edwards died Aug. 8 at the age of 70. He had served as pastor of churches in North and South Carolina as well as Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, Va., Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church, Martinsville, Va., and First Baptist Church, Ridgeway, Va. He is survived by his wife, Lois Luther Edwards, son, Brian T. Edwards; daughter, Kerri Edwards Carter; and two grandchildren. A funeral service was held Aug. 12 at First Baptist Church, Ridgeway, Va.

CHURCH TRANSITIONS

Patterson Avenue Baptist Church, Baltimore, Md., will hold its final service on Oct. 27. The congregation will pass on its 100-year heritage as well as its property to The Gallery Church of Baltimore. The Gallery Church celebrated its 5th anniversary on Sept. 8 and currently meets on Sunday mornings at the 1840s Plaza on South Front Street and at Salem United Methodist Church on Sunday evenings. The two congregations will hold a transitional celebration on Oct. 27 led by The Gallery Church.
