DEATHS



A. Kenneth Custalow Sr.,
former pastor of the Mattaponi Indian Church, in King & Queen, Va., died July 3 at the age of 77. He was a member of the Custalow Brothers singing ensemble for over 50 years. He is survived by his wife, Peggy T. Custalow; three sons, Ken Jr., Mark and Scott Sr.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held July 5 at the Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville, Va.

Charlotte Lovelace Hoover died July 1. She and her husband Lawrence were benefactors for numerous Baptist causes. They endowed a chair in pastoral care and counseling at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, made major gifts to the Baptist World Alliance, the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond and the International Mission Board. They also gave the Hoover Center at Eagle Eyrie Baptist Conference Center to Virginia Baptists. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra H. Mollica; a son, Arthur Craig Hoover; three grandchildren and a sister. A funeral service was held July 9 in North Springfield, Vermont.

Myron C. Madden died June 4 in Slidell, La., at the age of 95. He was a nationally recognized leader in chaplaincy and counseling, serving for 23 years as director of pastoral care at the former Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. He had also served as associate pastor at First Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., in the 1950s.

George F. Ricketts died July 11 at the age of 76. He was a chaplain in the Virginia National Guard and at Southampton Correctional Center and the State Farms in Goochland and Powhatan. In 1968 he was appointed executive director of the Chaplain Service of the Churches of Virginia Inc. and served for 27 years until his retirement in 1995. He served for 24 years as a member of the Virginia State Crime Commission, appointed by six governors. He was appointed by the State Senate to serve for eight years on the Criminal Sentencing Commission. The Judicial Council of the Supreme Court of Virginia ap­pointed him to serve on the Judicial Evaluation Task Force in 2000. He served as a trustee of the Religious Her­ald for 24 years. Ricketts was predeceased by his first wife, Dawn Crawford Ricketts. He is survived by his second wife, Deborah Burnette Ricketts; four children, Jennifer, Jeff and Mark Ricketts and Melanie R. Brent; 10 grandchildren and a brother. A memorial service was held July 16 at Philippi Christian Church in Deltaville, Va.
