The Love-in-Action Circle at Amelia (Va.) Baptist Church made over 50 tote bags for the Sioux children on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in the Dakotas as as mission project for the Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia. The children will use the bags when they return to school and underwear and socks will be placed in each bag. RETIREMENTS

Ron Gilbert, announcing plans to retire as director of missions for Lebanon Baptist Association in Glade Spring, Va., effective Sept. 30. He has served there for over 12 years and over 40 years in full-time ministry.

Jean Hatch, retiring as minister of senior adults and music at First Baptist Church, Clinton, N.C.

John S. Rogers, retiring as pastor of First Baptist Church, Ashboro, N.C., effective Sept. 30, following 20 years of ministry there.

Frederick K. Weimert, retiring as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Towson, Md., following 36 years of ministry there.

DEATHS

Virginia Baptist minister Rolen Conway Bailey died July 5 at the age of 85. He had served as pastor of: Mentow and Palestine Baptist churches in Huddleston, Va.; Straightstone Baptist Church, Long Island, Va. and Cave Spring Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va. He was named pastor emeritus of Cave Spring Baptist Church. In 1974 he was called as the first executive director of Roanoke Valley Baptist Association, where he served for 15 years until his retirement. He served for over eight years as a contract worker to start mission partnerships in Virginia and a partnership between Virginia and Pennsylvania/ South Jersey Baptist Conventions. He is survived by his wife, Frances Stuart Bailey; a daughter, Patricia Bailey Spragg; a son, John Stuart Bailey; one sister; two grandchildren; a step-granddaughter and two step-grandsons. A memorial service was held July 10 at Ridge Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.

Michael Scott Baker, pastor of Bluefield (Va.) Community Church for the past 16 years, died July 6 at the age of 49. He had also served as associate pastor of Arrowood Baptist Church, Chesnee, S.C. and senior pastor at Riverside Baptist Church, Chil­howie, Va. He is survived by his wife, Beth Altizer Baker; three children, Cayla, Gray and Toby Baker; mother and father, Doug and Nancy Baker; a brother, Chuck Baker; and other ex­tended family members. A funeral service was held July 11 at Community Heights Baptist Church, Cedar Bluff, Va.

John R. Boon, retired pastor of Oak Hall Baptist Church, Sandston, Va., died May 24. He had served in Virginia and Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, Pearl R. Boon; son, John T. Boon; daughters, Carolyn Stowers and Eliza­beth Hadley; five grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held May 18 at New Bethesda Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, Va.

Richard Allen Justice, an advocate for the deaf community, died May 8 at the age of 74. In 1988 he was one of the charter members of the Deaf Mis­sion at First Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. He became pastor of the Deaf Baptist Chapel in Norfolk, which met at Temple Baptist Church there. He was very active with organizations for the deaf, including the Virginia Baptist Conference of the Deaf. He is survived by his wife, Helen Brewer Justice; two daughters, Terri J.  Mulvin and Sara J. Durrett; and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held May 18 at First Baptist Church, Richmond.

James Donald Pardue, former pastor of Bon Air Baptist Church in Richmond, Va., died June 30 at the age of 79. During his ministry he served as pastor of six churches. In addition to Bon Air, he was pastor of Lillington (N.C.) Baptist Church, Temple Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn., First Baptist Church, Clinton, N.C., Faith Baptist Church in Baker, La. and Faith Baptist Church in Kaiserslautern, West Germany. Upon retirement he was interim pastor of five churches and served as a consultant for the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. He served as president of the Euro­pean Baptist Convention. He is survived by his wife, Judith Pennebaker Pardue; two sons, James Paul Pardue and John Howard Pardue; a daughter, Amy Pardue Boone; eight grandchildren; three brothers and a sister. A funeral service was held July 4 at First Baptist Church, Tellico Village, Tenn.

Hugh Robert “Rob” Stevenson, pastor of Acts 2 Church in Virginia Beach, died June 12 at the age of 51. He served for 20 years in the U. S. Navy as an entomologist. In 1995 he became pastor of Acts 2 Church, a new church plant in Virginia Beach. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his mother, Joanna; a brother, Judd; sons, Bryan, Clay, Grant and Mark; and 10 grandchildren. A memorial service was held June 15 at Parkway Christian Center in Virginia Beach.

Ray T. Vinson died June 25 in Staf­ford, Ky. A former professor at Fred­ericksburg (Va.) Bible College, he retired as pastor of Ramoth Baptist Church, Stafford, Va., in 2007 after serving for 43 years as a pastor. His ministry included churches in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Kuhl Vinson; four children, Pam Null, David Vinson, Ray “Tony” Vinson II and Robin Lopez; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service was held June 29 at Ramoth Baptist Church.

Elizabeth Chadwell, ordained to the ministry on June 16 by Salem Baptist Church, Fredericksburg, Va. She is chaplain at the Rappahan­nock Regional Jail and the Fluvanna Center for Women.

Mike Crabill, ordained to the ministry by Salem Baptist Church, Fredericks­burg, Va., on June 9. He is chaplain for the Alexandria Police Department.

Amy Lee Gallaher, ordained to the ministry on June 23 by Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, Cary, N.C.

Joey Tucker, ordained to the ministry on Aug. 4 by Clarksville (Va.) Baptist Church. He has been called as pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chase City, Va.

CHURCH TRANSITIONS

New Covenant Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., held its final service on June 30. This congregation which was constituted in 1982 was located on Patterson Avenue. Larry Frakes was serving as interim pastor. On Sept. 8 Bon Air Baptist Church in Richmond will launch its newest campus, Bon Air Baptist @ the village, at this location. Travis Collins is senior pastor of Bon Air Baptist Church.

Stukeley Hall Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., held its final service on July 15. Richard Landess was pastor of this congregation constituted in 1947 and located on Azalea Avenue. The Light Community Church, currently worshiping at Parham Road Baptist Church in Richmond, will hold its first service at this location on Sept. 8. Kimberly A. Ridley is pastor of The Light Community Church which was organized in 2010.
