Ciao!
And so begins a story in a new and exciting issue of Heritage Seekers. The issue was written by Lidia Maggi, an Italian Baptist pastor, in celebration of the partnership which Virginia Baptists have with Italian Baptists and to tell the story of “Living in the Shadow” or of being a minority.
The issue is in both English and Italian and can serve as a way to teach culture along with heritage to children. C. J. Key—the mascot for the publication—will lead readers through a maze of canals in Venice and help them discover the story of George Boardman Taylor, a Virginia Baptist pastor and missionary to Italy during the late 1800s. George's father and son also were prominent Virginia Baptists and are included in this issue.
In 2003, Virginia Baptists began a partnership with Italian Baptists and have sent several groups to the country as well as received several from Italy. The story of this partnership and Jerry Jones, the leader of Virginia Baptist partnership missions, are told in this issue.
Heritage Seekers magazine is intergenerational and is designed for children in 3rd through 6th grades and their parents and grandparents. Each issue focuses on one Baptist principle through the stories of historical and contemporary Baptists, and includes a family guide.
Single issues are $7 including shipping. Churches can order in bulk. For further information visit www.heritageseekers.org or call (804) 289-8434.
Churches can teach heritage using this resource. Contact Jon Messer, education coordinator for the Center, to discover ways your church can teach children to be Heritage Seekers.
By the way, the translation for the Italian above is, “Hi, my name is Marta and I'm 10 years old. I belong to a Baptist church in Rome and that's where I go to Sunday school. I'd like to tell you about where I live, but you'll have to go on a very long journey if you want to come and see me!”
