GREENSBORO, N.C. (ABP) — The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina likely will not change or abandon its four funding options for churches, even though some Baptists in the state have called for a simpler method of supporting Baptist ministries within the state and beyond.
The convention's budget committee recommended no changes in its report to the Executive Committee Aug. 10. Earlier in the year, the budget committee held a series of listening sessions and invited input regarding the four giving plans currently utilized to distribute contributions from churches.
The plans are designed to accommodate the different mission-giving preferences of conservative and moderate churches. While many North Carolina Baptists have said a single giving plan would be preferable, a majority of those who expressed an opinion favor retaining the plans as they are, budget committee chair LeRoy Burke said.
There is widespread recognition that a single plan is not realistic in the current climate, Burke said. “The reality is that we are not one-minded.”
The recommendation was approved unanimously by the Executive Committee and will be considered by the convention's General Board Sept. 28-29.
