Adoniram and Ann Judson are the featured Baptist heroes in the new issue of Heritage Seekers, the magazine for children and families published by the Center for Baptist Heritage & Studies. The theme of the issue is “Baptists and God's Word.”
The Judsons were Baptist missionaries to Burma but started their journey as Congregationalists. Adoniram's love for the Bible and determination to understand God's Word convinced the couple that baptism by immersion was the scripturally correct means of baptism. The Judsons paid a high price for translating the Bible into Burmese and that aspect of their story is conveyed through colorful graphics. This issue helps children understand the origins of the Bible, how Scripture is translated and the importance of the Bible in Baptist thought.
Heritage Seekers magazine is designed for children in third through sixth grades and their parents. Each issue focuses on one Baptist principle through the stories of historical and contemporary Baptists. Children encounter the rich Baptist heritage that preceded them while learning how they can leave their own heritage for future generations. Each issue is written by a professional children's educator. The issue on the Judsons was written by two children's curriculum writers, Leon and Nancy Castle.
Heritage Seekers includes a family guide with each issue to help adults teach the principle to children. Each issue features a different historical figure and important principle or theme and can be purchased for $7 including shipping. Past issues include Nannie Helen Burroughs (Working Together), William Carey (Reaching Out to Others), Lott Cary (Developing Leadership), Lottie Moon (Personal Commitment), Anabaptists (Showing Courage), Sam Houston (Spirit of Individualism), Alma Hunt (Women in Leadership) and George B. Taylor (Living in the Shadow). The premier issue told the story of James Ireland and Religious Liberty. For further information visit www.heritageseekers.org or call the Center at (804) 289-8434.
Churches can teach heritage using this resource. Some are creating heritage clubs while others are using the magazine as part of their mission program. Contact Jon Messer, education coordinator for the Center, to discover ways your church can teach children to be Heritage Seekers.
