 Kerby

RESOLUTION

Marvin F. Kerby recently received a House Joint Resolution by the Commonwealth of Virginia General Assembly commending him for his many years of community support and spiritual leadership. For 18 years he served on the West Point Town Council, was one of the first elected members of the West Point School Board and has been actively involved in numerous civic and community organizations. Kerby celebrated 50 years in the ministry last year. He has served as pastor at Vesuvius Church, Vesuvius; First Church, West Point; and currently is pastor of Glebe Landing Church, Laneview. • Whitney Clarke, to Mount Hermon Church, Danville, as minister to preschool and children.

• Grant Harbridge, to Lakewood Church, Evington, as part-time assistant pastor.

• Daniel Foss, to Hunting Creek Church, Big Island, as youth pastor.

 Sycamore

RECOGNITION

ORDINATIONS

• Justin Joplin, associate pastor at Westover Church, Richmond, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on Oct. 28.

• John Jessup, minister to children at Potomac Crest Church, Woodbridge, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on Nov. 4.

• Gloria Graham, Samual Massenberg, Belinda Moore, Suntosha Starkey and Denise Wilson were ordained to the gospel ministry on Sept. 30 by Mount Pleasant Church, Herndon.

• Mike Bowles, associate pastor for discipleship and missions at Staples Mill Road Church, Glen Allen, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on Nov. 11.

DEATHS

• Former Virginia Baptist pastor, Henry B. Land Jr. died Oct. 2 in Baltimore, Md. He served as pastor of Palestine Church, Huddleston, from 1971 until his retirement in 1979. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Land; three children, Bruce Land, Fay Morillon and Dawn Land-Walker; and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held Oct. 7 at First Church, Laurel, Md. He was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

• Ann Byrd Atkins Tubbs died Sept. 19 at the age of 85. She served in the Meadows of Dan area of Southwest Virginia with the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. She then served on the staff of the Mission Board in the Sunday School Department. She is predeceased by her husband, John M. Tubbs. She is survived by three brothers, a sister, two stepdaughters and several step-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Sept. 23 at Harmony Grove Church in Topping.

‘SIMPLE CHURCH' WORKSHOP IN ROANOKE

• What are we trying to accomplish with persons in our churches? To simply keep them busy or something more intentional and significant? Eric Geiger, co-author of the book, Simple Church, will attempt to answer those questions in a workshop on Mon., Dec. 3 at Bonsack Church in Roanoke.
