OUTLOUD

NewsReligious Herald  |  March 5, 2008

“I naively believed that speaking for peace as a pastor would make sense. ”

Frederick Boyle

The United Methodist pastor is facing fines and jail times for violating government restrictions by traveling to Iraq in 2003 to protest the pending U.S. invasion. He was quoted by The Times of Trenton, N.J. (RNS)

“The churches weren't going to accept me looking like a street person with long hair and faded jeans. They did not like the music I was recording. And I had no desire to preach the gospel to the converted. I wanted to be out on the sidewalk preaching to the runaways and the druggies and the prostitutes.”

Larry Norman

The gospel legend, often dubbed the father of Christian rock, was interviewed by CCM magazine. Norman died Feb. 24 at age 60. (RNS)

“It's a minor feast. Don't tell that to the Irish, though.”

Sister Mary Ann Walsh

The spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops was speaking about St. Patrick's Day, March 17. U.S. bishops have encouraged Catholics to honor the patron saint of Ireland earlier in March, so as not to interfere with Holy Week, which begins March 16. She was quoted by the Chicago Sun-Times. (RNS)
