STAFF CHANGES

• Wayne Tyree, to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, New Canton., Va., as pastor.

• Randy Cheeley, to Dinwiddie Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va., as pastor.

• Philip Reynolds, to First Baptist Church, Hickory, N.C., as pastor.

Temple Baptist Church in Covington, Va., celebrated the 20th anniversary of its pastor, Bill Hartsfield, and his wife, Honor (pictured above) Feb. 27. Special recognition was made and gifts and words of appreciation were shared at a meal following the morning service. During his ministry the church has completed a building program while maintaining a giving percentage of 20 percent to the BGAV’s Cooperative Ministries.

• Scott Covington, resigning as pastor of Berea Baptist Church, Fredericksburg, Va.

• David L. Phillips, to Cradock Baptist Church, Portsmouth, Va., as interim pastor.

• Rusty Lee, to Winfree Memorial Baptist Church, Midlothian, Va., as youth minister.

• Matt Johnson, to First Baptist Church of Smithton in Belhaven, N.C., as pastor.

• Ada Croke and Karen Soblotne to Faith Baptist Church, Hampton, Va., as music director and church pianist/organist, respectively.

• Christopher Ingram, to First Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, N.C., as pastor.

• Matthew N Stearn, now serving as director of music at Parkview Baptist Church, Newport News, Va.

• Shane Nixon, to First Baptist Church, Mocksville, N.C., as pastor.

ORDINATIONS

• Brent Miller, headmaster of Carmel Christian Academy in Ruther Glen, Va., was ordained to the gospel ministry by Second Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., on May 15.

• Alan Miller, minister of music and worship at Orange Baptist Church, Orange, Va., was ordained to the gospel ministry by Second Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., on May 15.

• Betty Burnell has been ordained to the gospel ministry by Westhaven Baptist Church, Portsmouth, Va.

• Jim Frankie, youth minister at Waverly Place Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va., was ordained to the gospel ministry by the chuch on May 22.

• Matthew S. Parron, minister to students and young adults at Parkview Baptist Church in Newport News., Va., will be ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on June 26.

DEATH

• Retired Virginia Baptist pastor Harold W. Johnson died May 6 in Charlottesville, Va., at the age of 82. He served as pastor of churches in Virginia and North Carolina. He was predeceased by his wife, Vina W. Johnson. He is survived by a daughter, Debra J. Norford; a son, Stephen A. Johnson; five grandsons; and two great-grandsons. A memorial service was held May 10 at Calvary Baptist Church, Charlottesville, Va.

CHURCH NEWS

• Hillcrest Baptist Church, Ridgeway, Va., will celebrate homecoming on June 5 with guest speaker Jeff Ginn. A covered-dish lunch will follow the service.

• Webber Memorial Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., will celebrate its 90th homecoming on June 5. Ron Raines, youth director from 1990-1992, will be guest speaker.

• A mission group from Main Street Baptist Church, Emporia, Va., gave lap robes to residents at a local nursing home on April 2. Several in the Lottie Moon Mission Circle learned to crochet and the idea of making lap robes was born. The group did not envision completing robes for all residents, but those who received them were appreciative of the gift and the visit from the ladies.

PEOPLE

• Caleb Oladipo, the Duke K. McCall professor of Christian mission and world Christianity at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, will present a paper at the Yale-Edinburgh Conference on the History of the Missionary Movement and World Christianity at Yale Divinity School on June 30-July 2.

• Beth Newman, professor of theology and ethics at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, will serve as a panelist for “Crossing Over? Evangelical and Roman Catholic Perspectives” at the College Theology Society/ National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion at Iona University in New Rochelle, N.Y., on June 2-4.

• Bluefield College in Bluefield, Va., honored its employees at an awards ceremony May 5. Cynthia Bascom, associate professor of communiction, was presented the 2011 Wampler Caudill Distinguished Faculty Award for classroom excellence, Christian character, and professional, community and church involvement. The 2011 Distinguished Staff Award was given to Mark Hipes, director of traditional admissions, for his leadership qualities and passion for helping others.
