Despite a deluge of public opposition, President Trump recently secured coveted approval to erect a 250-foot triumphal arch directly between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Referring to it as a “monstrous vanity project,” detractors protested the destruction of one of D.C.’s most stunning vistas, as well as the disruption to a “sacred axis” that stretches between the two monuments. Their spatial relationship, nearby signage explains, is meant to encode onto the city’s landscape the aspiration to heal the deep wounds of the Civil War.
