STAFF CHANGES

Nick Carter, to American Baptist Seminary of the West, Berkeley, Calif., as interim president, effective May 15. He served as president of Andover Newton Theological School for 10 years prior to retirement.

Sheri Castle, resigning as minister of worship at New Highland Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, Va.

Kyle Caudle, resigning as minister of spiritual formation at First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, N.C., to accept the pastorate of Christ Community Church, Pfafftown, N.C.

Paul Clark, to First Baptist Church, Springfield, Va., as intentional interim consultant.

Allen Cumbia, now serving as director of communications at First Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.

Beverley Edwards, to May Memorial Baptist Church, Powhatan, Va., as minister of music.

Tom Everett, to Mineral (Va.) Baptist Church, as pastor. Previously he was pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, Newport News, Va.

Jaime Flores, to American Baptist Churches of Indiana and Kentucky, as Hispanic ministries strategist.

Christopher Gourley, to North Riverside Baptist Church, Newport News, Va., as interim pastor.

Katy Harriger, professor and chair of politics and international affairs at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C., named faculty director of the University’s new Wake Washington program, which will combine academic and internship experiences in the nation’s capital. The program is scheduled to be launched in fall 2017.

Bobby Hall, to Wayland Baptist University, Plainview, Texas, as president, effective June 30. He currently serves as executive vice president and provost and will hold that position until June 30.

Stephen Price, to First Baptist Church, Hyattsville, Md., as interim pastor. He comes from Heritage Baptist Church, Annapolis, Md., where he also served as interim pastor.

Len Sak, to Deermeadows Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla., as interim minister to adults 55+.

Jim Riddell, to Mount Gilead Baptist Church, Columbia, Va., as pastor. 

RETIREMENTS

Leroy Kemp, retiring after more than 30 years at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas. He began his career there in 1964 serving as associate professor of religion and dean of admissions. After a time away he returned to campus and now has been teaching a total of 32 years.

Theo Thorne, retiring as associate general secretary for mission resource development for American Baptist Churches USA, effective Aug. 31. 

ORDINATION

Rick Deere, ordained to ministry on May 1 by First Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.

DEATHS

Harold Germer, 80, died April 7 in Jacksonville, Fla. He served on the American Baptist Board of Educational Ministries in the 1980s. As director of collegiate education services for BEM, he coordinated the American Baptist Association of Colleges and Universities. He was president of American Baptist-related Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kan. He is survived by his wife, Laura; two sons, Paul and John; a daughter, Elizabeth; and grandson, Cole.

David Stone, 78, died April 9 in Youngstown, Ohio. A commissioned missionary of American Baptist Home Mission Societies, he led Neighborhood Ministries—among ABHM’s network of Neighborhood Action Program Christian Centers—from 1969 until his retirement in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Frances; two sons, Timothy and Daniel; stepchildren, Carol, Terry, Bruce and Susie; and four grandchildren.

Daniel Lee Williams, 62, died April 28 in San Marcos, Texas. He was a pastor for 38 years, serving churches in Lubbock, San Angelo and Driftwood, Texas, Kentucky, Indiana, Oklahoma and Hong Kong. In 2004 he left pastoral ministry to lead in establishing the Texas Baptist Lay Institute. He is survived by his wife, Anita; two sons, Clayton and Nathan; a daughter, Anna Broome; and his father, Bill.
