‘Unscrupulous individuals’ using BWA, BGAV names to obtain money illegally, leaders warn

NewsJim White  |  June 19, 2013

RICHMOND — Baptist leaders are warning that “unscrupulous individuals” are using the names of Baptist World Alliance officers — including president John Upton, who also is executive director of the Baptist General Association of Virginia — to obtain money illegally.

The attempts, which typically take the form of requests for assistance, are being made by both email and telephone, said the leaders.

“Please note that the BGAV, the BWA and its representatives do not operate in the manner these scammers do,” noted a June 20 email distributed by the BGAV, similar to one released by the BWA on June 5. “We ask that you do not open or respond to suspicious emails or telephone calls, and where appropriate, notify law enforcement authorities.”

Questions about the authenticity of emails or telephone calls can be directed to Marilee White in Upton’s office at [email protected] or at  800.255.2428, extension 1201.
