Award for Intermont artist. Marvin Tadlock, professor of art at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., received a merit award this spring for his sculpture “Moire,” exhibited during the Knoxville (Tenn.) Art in Public Places Competition and Exhibition. The eight-foot stainless steel kinetic piece bends with the wind similar to a weather vane but rights itself when the breeze dies. Two patterns at the top reflect moire patterns when the sculpture moves. A multiple award winner in national competions, Tadlock’s works are on permanent display throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, including the campus of Baptist-affiliated Intermont.

Latino leaders receive certificates. Eighteen Latino leaders from churches on the Eastern Shore received their certificate in ministerial formation from the John Leland Center for Theological Studies May 7 in a ceremony at First Baptist Church, Newport News, Va., one of Leland’s academic centers. President Mark Olson and dean Jeff Willetts conferred the certificates in a service conducted mostly in Spanish, and presided over by Greg Smith, director of Leland’s Latino Leadership Initiative. Speaker for the event was Juan García, pastor of the Latino congregation of First Church, Newport News. The certificate in ministerial formation is a year-long program of biblical, theological and ministerial studies in Spanish on 24 consecutive Saturdays.
