What makes a Baptist a Baptist?

Why Baptist? It’s a question most often answered with why we aren’t “that kind of Baptist.” Yet what makes a Baptist a Baptist?

In conjunction with its 2017 annual gathering, the Alliance of Baptists will hold a “Why Baptist?” event on Thursday, April 27, at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. Seven nationally-respected speakers have been invited to share stories and thoughts on one of the seven points of the Alliance of Baptists’ covenant followed by interactive conversation with moderators who are creative, thoughtful and engaged in Baptist life and beyond.

“Why Baptist?” attendees can share stories of why they are committed to Baptist traditions, hear from speakers about their expressions of Baptist-ness and discuss why Alliance Baptists have hope in what Baptists can offer the world.

“The event will enable attendees to draw mirrors where we’re able to look at ourselves so that we might better reflect Baptist identity in the future,” said Paula Clayton Dempsey, director of partnership relations for the Alliance. “We believe this event could have huge impact for years to come.”
