The challenge today is how to distinguish between, on the one hand, attempts to license discrimination that come cloaked in the language of religious freedom and, on the other hand, genuine disagreements about how people and institutions of vastly different convictions can live together in a pluralistic society.

During worship services and a two-hour gathering Friday that the church called a “family meeting,” Bill Hybels and elders walked members through three inquiries overseen by elders over the last four years, all of which cleared Hybels of misconduct.
