VETERANS DAY

On Nov. 11, 2007, Yeoman First Class Jarrett “Rusty” Swann, (U.S. Coast Guard) and Tech. Sgt. Stephen Conley (U.S. Air Force), led in the observance of Veterans Day at Howertons Church, Howerston. Veterans present were recognized and given a Challenge Coin. A letter from Virginia Senator Jim Webb was read and a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol was presented the church. Flags were placed at the graves of veterans buried in the church cemetery before the service. Pictured are (left to right): first row, Rusty Swann, Ryland “Doodle” Balderson, George McGhee, Jimmy Kickler, Joe Brenzovich, Betty Hayes and Stephen Conley; second row, Chuck Schools, James Wright, Steve Winder, Jack Weiss, Mickey Davis, Michael O'Quinn and Lee Sumner.

• Mary Burgess, to Cradock Church, Portsmouth, as interim music director.

• Amy R. Stertz, resigning as minister of Christian education at Azalea Church, Norfolk, to accept a similar position in South Carolina.

• Michael and Jeni Wenrich, to Falling Creek Church, Midlothian, as youth ministers.

• Kevin Ly, to Calvary Hill Church, Fairfax, as youth pastor.

• Doug Grote, resigning as minister of recreation at Cool Spring Church, Mechanicsville, to accept a position at Upward sports ministry in South Carolina.

• Chris Moore, to Falling Creek Church, Midlothian, as associate pastor.

• Anna Perry Miller, resigning as minister to youth and young adults at Derbyshire Church, Richmond.

SEMINARY GRADUATES

• Two graduates with Virginia ties received degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 7. Michael E. Bucy of Christiansburg received a master of arts in Christian education degree. His home church is Main Street Baptist in Christiansburg. Sarah H. Woodward of Richmond received a master of arts in biblical counseling degree.

ORDINATIONS

• Sam Duenckel was ordained to the gospel ministry by his home church, Central Baptist in Newnan, Georgia, on Nov. 25.

• Bonita Durham, minister of music at Pleasant Hill Church, Troutville, was ordained to the gospel ministry by the church on Sept. 30.

CHURCH EVENTS

• Powers Memorial Church, Hopewell, will hold revival services Jan. 20-23 with Roger Roller as guest evangelist.

• Cool Spring Church, Mechanicsville, will host The Jeremiah People presenting, “Family Snaps,” a musical/drama for the entire family on Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. A love offering will be taken. For further information call 804-746-0800 or www.coolspring.org.

ASSOCIATIONAL NEWS

• Dover Baptist Association's Woman's Missionary Union sponsored a Children's Missions Fair in late October at Cool Spring Church in Mechanicsville. About 70 children enjoyed one-on-one time with International and North American Mission Board missionaries who had booths with information about the countries they serve.

Hands for Christ is an annual youth workday sponsored by Southside Baptist Association. The goal is to provide work for the elderly and disabled who are not able to do it themselves. Last year about 40 youth and adult volunteers gathered for Hands for Christ to work on seven different homes around Lunenburg County.
