When Ben Cole and I sat down with Jodi Chapman in Nashville two days ago, we did not realize the incredible timing of what was about to take place.
We were recording a new episode of our “Stuck in the Middle with You” podcast when Ben got a text message from Jodi’s son, Chris Chapman, asking Ben to urge his mother to speak publicly about his father’s health condition. His father and Jodi’s husband of 62 years is Morris Chapman, former president of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. Chris did not know we were recording the podcast that day.
That text message sparked what Jodi needed to speak publicly for the first time about her husband’s battle with Lewy Body dementia — a rapid and heartbreaking disease that is always fatal. She and her family and friends have been carrying this burden alone.
In our podcast episode published just moments ago, you can hear her own words about this incredible journey and how her faith is sustaining her — and has sustained her throughout her life.
Jodi Chapman is an incredible Southern Baptist woman. In the podcast, we capture her stories about being a very visible pastor’s wife and the often-unseen wife of a denominational leader. We learn about her work as one of only two women on the SBC Peace Committee. And we learn about her work as a nurse lovingly caring for HIV/AIDS patients in Wichita Falls, Texas, in the early 1980s.
We’ve had some great podcast episodes thus far, but nothing matches the untold history and insights of this interview with Jodi Chapman. Listen to it here.
