I drove slowly along a winding 13-mile dirt road in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness area in New Mexico on a cool Saturday morning. Aside from the occasional bird and the sound of my tires crunching on the gravel, there was no noise. The waning moon hung in the light blue sky as I made my way through switchbacks and arroyos.
