Baptists with a combined hankering for travel and hard work are in luck as denominational disaster recovery organizations are beginning to issue their calls for help this spring and summer.
American Baptist Churches USA has posted three mission opportunities on its website, ranging from tornado-ravaged Gifford, Ill., and Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey, to New Orleans where Hurricane Katrina work continues in some neighborhoods.
“Bringing Good News to Gifford” will be held June 1-14 in and around the town struck by an F-3 tornado in November 2013. “Coming Together for New Jersey: Rebuild, Renew and Restore” runs July 12-19 and Aug. 9-16. “Home Mission: ‘Till the Work is Done” will be Aug. 3-9 in New Orleans.
The Baptist General Convention of Texas got into the act on Thursday by issuing an email blast seeking volunteers for recovery projects in that state and in Colorado.
Volunteers are needed to do cleanup and rebuild homes damaged by flooding in Jamestown, Colo., in June, July and August, leaders of Texas Baptists Disaster Recovery announced.
They also said “Loving Eagle Pass” will be held June 22-28 in the Texas town where hundreds of homes were destroyed by flooding in June 2013.
